This evening I checked out the Silk City Diner on Spring Garden Street. They remodeled a while ago, and though I never went to the old one, I heard good things about it. The diner is adjacent to a bar/club that has live music at night, but being it was dinner time we headed to the red-silvery tabled section. The atmosphere is welcoming, like an old fashioned diner, but has a modern, philly cafe overtone. The lighting is softer, and more colorful upon a closer look. I started off with a Sly Fox Rt. 113 IPA, which was quite reasonably priced at only $3 for a draft. I am not sure if thats a happy hour special.
We appetized on some mac and cheese, then I had a crabcake sandwich meal. The mac&cheese had a creamy sauce with toasted bread crumbs ontop, which tasted okay, but I prefer a but more cheese. The crabcake sandwich rivaled many I have had in Maryland. Growing up outside of DC, I am quite picky when it comes to crabcakes, and I was pretty impressed here. The accompanying old-bay fries were a nice touch, but weren't anything extraordinary. The cole slaw, however, quickly made up for the french fries. Fresh, home made, and with a hint of spice, Silk City brings cole slaw to a whole new level. My biggest dissapoint was when I boxed the remainder of my meal, the cole slaw was neglected.
Overall definitely worth a visit. The prices are reasonable, and food perfect fix for that diner craving you've had since the winter started. Toss ontop a nice brew, and you've got a good evening.
